BT use SMTP authentication to check that only legitimate BT customers send email through their outgoing mail servers.
If you are accessing the Internet via a BT Business connection and wish to send email through the BT Business email servers, then you have to activate SMTP authentication for any @btconnect.com email account (or attached email alias) when using a standalone email client such as Outlook or Outlook Express.
Also if you wish to send email from a domain email address hosted by a third party and you want the outgoing mail to be sent via BT SMTP then you must activate SMTP authentication. In addition, since the beginning of 2006 BT also require that you register with them any domain that you wish to relay through their mailservers. They also now insist that the domain name is registered to the person who's name (or address) is on the account at BT. This can be a real pain for a lot of people and hosts like us at Swift Solutions. Many of our clients have us manage their domains with full control and using our registered address which can be very inconvenient.
If you do host your website with Swift Solutions then this article is not relevant to yourdomain.co.uk as BT SMTP authentication is NOT required. See configuring email in the Knowledgbase articles on configuring email clients
If you do need email authentication then this is how to do it:
- In your Outlook program, Click the Tools menu and click Accounts
You will see a list of the accounts you have set up.
- To modify the information you currently have, select the account in the list that you wish to change and click Properties.
- You will now see four tabs:
- General
- Servers
- Connection
- Advanced
- Select the Servers tab
This tab contains the server details from the email account that you have already created.
A List of BT server settings is available on the BT Website via this link BT Server Details (opens in new window)
- Confirm that the Incoming Mail Server is POP3
- If this is a BT account ensure that the Incoming Mail (POP3) is pop3.btconnect.com
If this is not a BT account your incoming mail setting as provided by your ISP will be in here. If this is a Swift Solutions hosted domain your Incoming Mail (POP3) is yourdomainname.co.uk
- Ensure that the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) is mail.btconnect.com
- If you are configuring a BT account ensure that the Account Name field contains your BT Business username (username@btconnect.com)
If you are configuring an account for your own domain name or another non BT account then ensure that this field contains the correct username for the account. If this is a Swift Solutions hosted domain your username will be the first part of your email address (the part before the @ sign. (e.g. yourname@yourdomain.co.uk) your username would be yourname
- Ensure that the Password field contains the appropriate password and place a tick within the remember password box
- Ensure that the box labelled My server requires authentication is selected
- Click on the Settings button
If you are configuring a BT mail account you can check Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
If you are configuring a non BT mail account, check Log on using, and type your BT Connect mail account username and password here.
- Click on the OK button
